CROYDON
The vibrant town of Croydon has a town crest with a mural crown surmounted by discs of wavy blue and white stripes, which symbolises water. It is flanked by an oak and a beech branch taken from the Coulsdon and Purley arms.
There is plenty to discover on the northern border of Surrey as Croydon has several parks and gardens that represent its flower culture. In Arthur Court, there is Park Hill Park. It is close to all travel amenities, especially East Croydon station.
There are two ways to enter the park; from Coombe Road and Fairfield Path or Barclay Road. This lovely little park is ideal for the family. It has tennis courts and basketball courts that serve as football courts.
There is a playground for kids and enough benches for adults to sit in. Some shade areas are available to avoid the glare of the sun. There is also a herb garden maintained by volunteers with rosemary, thyme and even strawberries!
Park Hill also serves as an escape to eat lunch in the open air for people working in the area. A pleasant stroll during lunch breaks with the presence of beautiful spring blossom trees. A walled garden and the old water tower are great features to discover.
Overall, Park Hill is a small park with ornamental lawns further up the hill. The flowerbeds are beautiful additions to this modest green lung of Croydon.
Coombe Wood Gardens is a lovely park known for the beautiful rhododendrons and azaleas blooming in the spring and summer. The flowers can be found in the woodland area while beautiful bedding plants are at the entrance. Most people admire the park for its well-tended landscaped gardens.
The gardens have a fascinating array of plants that come alive during spring and summer. In the colder months, snowdrops litter the lawns that are simply magical on a cold sunny day. A great tree stands proudly near a lawned area that is sandwiched between the vibrant flower beds.
In the park's entrance, there is a pond and mini waterfalls with a Stonehenge structure. A forest with steep hills is open to those who want a bit of adventure. There are several walkways through the garden and woodland which are accessible to most parts of the park.
Selsdon Wood in South Croydon is a mix of wood and meadow, which is not too hilly and not too flat. The grounds are perfect for dog walking, and wildlife is abundant in the area. It has one of the best woodland coppice management cycles in any public woodland - hence the beautiful bluebells growing in the wild.
In May and June, wander through the meadows and woodland edges and find orchids. A lot of visitors overlook the diversity this park offers. Selsdon Wood has exceptional flora and fauna from the orchid species and birdlife present in any season.
There is also Spring Park at Inchwood. It is a stretch of woodland and grassy area that is highly accessible. The trees in this park are well-maintained, while the grassland is popular with responsible dog walkers.
