HALIFAX
Whether planning for an afternoon away or a short stay packed with activities, Halifax is the best place for it. As Calderdale's largest town, it features a charming market town with stunning Victorian architecture. It is home to different cultural and entertainment establishments.
Halifax has several markets, independent and high street shops, theatres, pubs, and restaurants. Find Yorkshire's most famous landmarks and iconic buildings in this market town. Museums are also hardly in short supply.
Halifax is a place for all ages. Inquisitive minds will enjoy the hands-on learning at Eureka! The National Children's Museum. Meanwhile, mini explorers will feel at home among the many woodland trails. Whatever the season, there is something to keep families of all sizes busy.
Sightseeing and shopping are fun, but you can only do so much. Head to the town's fine selection of cafes, restaurants and bars. Visit Halifax in June for the annual food and drink festival. But, there is always the indulging afternoon tea, cuisine from around the world, and local ale to sip.
For green spaces, start at Halifax's town centre. It is enveloped by glorious green space and vast parks with rolling hills. Head out in the great outdoors of Halifax and discover everything nature has to offer. Start the journey with Manor Heath Park.
The park is an open space with a wide variety of deciduous and coniferous trees, which attract onlookers at any time of the year. It also has a walled garden that horticulturists would find interesting. It features a container garden displaying plants in pots and hanging baskets.
Part of Manor Heath Park is the Necklace Garden, an enclosed formal Victorian garden with traditional plants and roses. The grounds are spacious enough for group events and small gatherings. There is also woodland with a variety of wildflowers and herbaceous plants.
At the top of the park are a cafe and tea room. There is also a play area for the young ones. Dog walkers are welcome but stay mainly at the bottom, far from the formal gardens and play park.
There is a butterfly house in one corner. See a large selection of tropical butterflies from the chrysalis stage to beautiful adults. Picnic benches are scattered around the park. The area is always busy with families, dog walkers, and cyclists, especially on warm, dry days.
A pond and a water feature are also present in the park. Similar to a paddling pool, it gets busy during summer. Overall, the park is an excellent place to unwind and take some time out from the stresses of everyday life. Considered a real gem by locals, Manor Heath Park has access to shops and establishments like the Calderdale Royal Hospital.
Another park in Halifax is Shibden Park on Godley Lane. It is a family park set in the basin of Shibden Valley on the edge of Halifax. It has a good mix of facilities and features Shibden Hall, a beautiful old building with a courtyard open for short tours.
Part of the park is a cafe, a railway, a boating lake and a playground. There are plenty of grass areas, and the children's play area is large enough to accommodate many visitors. The boating lake is open every summer.
Next to the boating lake is the miniature railway that threads through the trees. There are plenty of paths and woodland to explore on foot, keeping the family busy for the entire day. For rest, a cafe is open throughout the year with seating inside and out.
The third park on the list is Ogden Water Country Park. It is a serene natural beauty surrounding a working reservoir and historic water basin in North Halifax. Get a beautiful walk around the reservoir and witness the stunning views and great surroundings.
The area is very relaxing and provides an easy walk. Lots of benches are available, and a picnic area stands near the reception. Known for its clean and crisp surroundings, Ogden Water Country Park is the place to visit to be one with nature.
Halifax's flower culture is vibrant and evident in the beautifully maintained parks in the city. Besides these parks, the flower culture is alive in the florists by The Flower Shops. Visit these local florists to see how they deliver happiness through floral gifts to the people of Halifax.
